Used scientific methods to study fundamental psych processes ex)how long it took for a person to detect sight/sound of bell being struck: know the different schools of psychology. Structuralism: titchener, 1st major school of thought, also 1st to dissappear. Most complex conscious proceses can be broken down into elemental structures( ex: sensations, feelings, etc. ) Trained people for introspection: view stimulus and try to reconstruct feelings after viewing. Unreliable investigation, varied responses, cant be used for kids or animals. Learning , development, mental disorders, and personality cant be explored. Emphasized conscious thoughts of patients ex) potential for psychological growth and self direction. Contradicts behaviorism because sees human behavior as shaped / maintained by external causes. Self determination, freee will, and choice in human behavior is emphasized. Maslow: hierarchy of needs, theory of motivation. Stressed importance of how behavior functions allow people and animals to adapt to their environments. Did not limit to introspection, expanded research to include naturalistic observation.
