Document Summary

Evidence that has survived from the romans world: In the middle ages in the wake of the downfall of rome, as europe entered the dark. Ages when literacy rates plummeted, monks painstakingly copied ancient books in order to preserve them in their libraries. In the renaissance, when general interest in the ancient world returned, scholars turned to these libraries to find books describing the romans and began to publish new editions. The rate of publication increased with the invention of the printing press. Relief sculptures: carved onto a piece of stone and not out of it, so the background is retained and figures can be depicted in a scene. Wall painting: roman painter would generally paint directly onto the plaster covering of a wall. Mosaics also survive the centuries much better than paint which fades easily with age. Written records only begin in the 3rd century bc: romans manipulated the memory of their past.
