Selye called the general reaction of the body to stress the general adaptation syndrome. If adaptation occurs, the third stage is either delayed or prevented. The physiological symptoms may disappear: stage of exhaustion: this occurs when there is a prolonged exposure to the stressor. The adapted energy is depleted, diseases of adaptation occur. (head aches, ulcers, mental disorders, coronary artery disease) without interventions for reversal, exhaustion and sometime even death will occur. A second concept defines stress as the thing or event that triggers the adaptive physiological and psychological responses in an individuals. The event creates change in the life pattern of the individual, requires significant adjustment in lifestyle.
