BIOL 1002 : Bio Notes Test 2 (CH. 22,44)
Document Summary
Diploid cells: 1 nucleus 2 copies of chromosomes. Mitosis used to make 2 haploid cells (identical: mycelium, spore-producing structures, germination. Ancient group diverged earliest from other fungi. Aquatic the only fungi with flagellated spores. Sexual reproduction to produce sexual and asexual zygospores. Mutualistic symbiotic (fungus and plants get nutrients, plants go through photosynthesis and gets sugar then fungus gets sugar from plant) During asexual reproduction, clusters of spores are produced by mitosis and remain outside the host plant cell at the tips of the hyphae. When the spores germinate, hyphae grow into the surrounding soil and penetrate new plant roots. Named for the sac (ascus) which contain 8 haploid ascospores. Ex: good yeast- bread and beer; bad yeast thrush, vaginal infections. Asexual reproduction via naked spores (conidia) not surrounded by sac. Basidia found on the surface of gills; meiosis and karyogamy takes place here. Asexual reproduction: fragmentation, either naturally (runners) or artificial (clippings)
