There are steroid based signal molecules and protein based signal molecules. Steroids are permeable to the cell membrane so their receptors are in the cytoplasm. Signal molecules that are not permeable to the membrane have receptors in the cell membrane. Signal transduction pathways: g-proteins: in the membrane, there is a protein that goes all the way through the membrane. Cellular responses: g protein and tyrosine kinase change gene regulation (turn genes on or off; typically very slow) and activate enzyme pathways (very fast, msec-sec, gated channels change ion concentration. In one type of diabetes, one hormone is not produced. Hormones turn on or off systems throughout the plant (germination, fruit ripening, etc. ) Most of the time, you want constant blood sugar, but you sometimes need an adrenaline rush (epinephrines). When you nearly crash your car, your body dumps a ton of insulin all at once to either run or fight (fight or flight).
