Document Summary

Atoms smallest unit of matter by normal chemical means, smallest unit that retains all of the properties of that element. Atomic number=the number of protons in an atom. Atomic mass= the number of protons and neutrons in an atom (approximately) Isotopes= variants of an atom, having a different atomic mass (neutron: example: carbon14 [p=6,n=8,atomic mass=14] Electron shells: (can hold as many electrons: shell k= 2 [inner most shell, shell l= 8, shell m=8. Chemical bonds form when atoms gain and lose or share electrons: they are the result of electrical attractions. Ionic bond: form when atoms completely gain and lose electrons, strongest bonds when dry. Covalent bond: form when atoms share electrons, non-polar covalent bond(equally covalent) and polar covalent(unequally shared, strongest in water because of polarity. Weak bonds: bonds which are not involved in making a substance, hydrogen bonds are weak bonds.
