Document Summary

Science: a process called the scientific method. What do scientists do: make observations, attempt to discern patterns, assume that all future is like the past. What is biology: the study of life. Scale of nature: what are the sizes of biologically important structures, smallest (atom) - 10-8m, largest (communities, ecosystems) - 106m. Bio1201 and work towards a wholist approach in bio1202. Why is atomic structure biologically important: organisms are composed largely of 11 different elements, value for an average human (elements)- , what is the difference between those chemicals and you, how that of chemicals is organized. If we understand the organization of atoms we understand how they interact and: humans have very specific organization o if we understand how they interact we understand the organization of us and other biological systems. If you subdivide an atom into subatomic particles, you lose the properties of that: an atom is composed of many smaller particles.
