Document Summary

Balances water and solute concentration for osmotic balance to help control movement of material in and out of cells. Question: the solute concentration inside a cell you construct is 1m. You place the cell in a 2m solution. Water leaves the cell faster than it enters. Osmosis: the movement of water across a selectively permeable membrane. Water moves from low solute area (hypoosmotic) high solute area (hyperosmotic) Water moves to the more negative water potential side. Isotonic to their surroundings, do not regulate the osmolarity. Marine bony fish: hypoosmotic to sea water. Lose water by osmosis: need to drink more water and excrete excess salt through special glands in their gills. They have very concentrated and low volume urine. Constantly gain water by osmosis: need to take in salts through food and gills. They have very diluted and high volume urine. Live in salt water, but are actually hyperosmotic to it.
