Chapter28: protists: mostly unicellular, extremely diverse (more than all eukaryotes, photoautotrophs, heterotrophs & mixotrophs, not monophyletic! Endosymbiosis: important in the evolution of photosynthetic protists. Photosynthesis in protists came from endosymbiosis: primary one membrane, secondary more than one. Movement: flagellates move by using one or more flagella, ciliates move by coordinated movement of ciliate, amoebae move by using pseudopodia. Named for some members having an excavated feeding groove on one side of the cell body & similarities in the cytoskeleton. Alveolates (contain alveoli membrane bound sacs: dinoflagellates: Red tides caused by population explosions of certain dinoflagellates: apicomplexans: One end of sporozioite (inside mosquito) contains specialized organelles for penetrating host. Micro: stores genetic code & is necessary for reproduction. Conjugation- exchange haploid micronuclei but does not reproduce. Important for global carbon cycle produce more oxygen than plants: brown algae. Lots of convergent evolution between brown algae & plants. Uses holdfast to stay planted: rhizara, radiolarians.
