Educational field: teaching about hearing and consequences of hearing loss, assisting children with hearing needs to maximize speech and language acquisition and school performance. Preventative health field: screening newborns and young kids, monitoring those at risk for hearing loss. Counseling: help people understand their problems and options. *about 97% of deaf kids are born to hearing parents- they don"t know what to do. Field began after ww2 when vets were experiencing hearing problems, either from exposure to noise in the field or from head injuries. Audiology services produced excellent results, even in the 1940"s (technology and diagnostic procedures were primitive) *mechanism by which we hear (ear)- located on the outside of the brain. Pinna: most visible, doesn"t contribute to what you hear, helps localize sound (what direction sound is coming from) Middle ear: air-filled space (not good when fluid filled)
