Document Summary

The ultimate base level is generally sea level: different parts of the river: Nickpoint- when the longitudinal profile of a stream shows an abrupt change in gradient, point of interruption: gradient: decline in elevation from its headquarters to its mouth. Deposition- a stream deposits alluvium (unconsolidated sediment), thereby creating depositional landforms (bars, floodplains, terraces, deltas) Floodplain- flat, low-lying area flanking many stream channels that is subjected to recurrent flooding: formed when the river overflows its channel during times of high flow, naturally level, so people build houses. Natural levees- develop as by-products of flooding. Alluvial terraces- look like topographic steps above the river: formed as a stream cuts into a valley. Delta- the level depositional plain that forms at the mouth of a river: grows outward, braided rivers, channels, divide into smaller courses, distributaries, examples: ganges river (arcuate), niles (arcuate), tiber (estuarine delta)
