What are the plates? tectonic plates are fragments of the lithosphere continental- lighter more buoyant (felsic: oceanic- heavier less buoyant (mafic) How does the lithosphere move? the lithosphere is made of both crust and upper mantle it"s in motion over the asthenosphere lithosphere bends elastically when loaded. Wegner came up with plate tectonics- continents just seemed to fit together location of glaciations fossils rock type: paleoclimate preservation in rocks. Sea floor spreading was discovered by harry hess: upwelling mantle erupts at mid-ocean ridge, new ocean moves away from ridges gathering sediments, at trenches sea floor dives back into mantle.
