No evidence of government or military has been found. Civilization based on the island of crete: safe, fertile land, good stopping point for traders. Minoan religion: emphasis on sports, music, arts, male zeus, female snake goddess, women seemed to be more highly valued. Controlled shipping throughout much of the aegean sea. Traders: excellent pottery, a lot of contact with outside cultures. Evidence of political organization: elevated throne showed cultural hierarchy. Showed greek culture was much older than previously thought. Island that was the home of the minoan civilization. More warlike: more emphasis on military than other cultures. Territorial kingdoms: formed around a king, warrior caste and a palace bureaucracy, fortified palaces, king was the strongest military leader. Polytheistic religion: elements from later greek religion found, zeus, poseidon. No place for women in their society: most important women received stolen gold and jewels as gifts. No one knows why their culture collapsed. C. 1200 bce: indo-european groups migrate to the aegean.
