Document Summary

Early medieval period: 500-1000, the former roman empire is in now dominated by the germanic peoples, the christian church is really the only power. Franks, visigoths, ostrogoths: these are different germanic kingdoms that dominate this area, ostrogoths are in italy, visigoths are in spain- rule over a fairly prosperous kingdom, create a fairly successful kingdom, they were converted to. Christianity and then the kings there basically tried to force religious uniformity in spain. This area was later conquered by arab armies, and was brought under the caliphate. Visigoths only there for about 150 years: the franks, they were pretty important, in control of northern gaul by the late 400"s. The king"s were just first among the equals. Then he goes and gets baptized: probably completely made up, but none the less he did convert to. Christianity: this was an early victory by the church, this often was the pattern- king converts and then expects his people to convert as well.
