Document Summary

American colonies were not profitable to the british at this time. Usually filled with discontents and criminals (especially georgia) and exiles. British policy begins to change with the 7 years war or the french and indian war. Settlement after war reflect european rather than colonial concerns. Colonists could not settle in previous french colonies. Everything you had for business or any legal papers had to be notarized. Effects professional people - not entire population of the colonies. East india company had entered a period of economic bad luck. All the colonies (not just american) had to now buy tea all from east india. Colonists were angry about this because they believed they would be consenting to a parliamentary tax when they have no representation there. In the 1770s, 6% of population can vote in parliamentary elections. So basically, nobody is represented in government at this time. Colonists are complaining about something that everybody has to deal with.
