Songhay: is different cause islamic through contact with arab traders. African state in 15th c. sunni ali was the songhay empire"s first great king. Swahili: a people in east africa and a language. Swahili talking nations got to trade with south africa out of zimbabwe (which south africa setup as a trading post with them). Indian traders were there fro a long time and the portuguese didn"t want them there anymore (wanted to get rid of the middleman to india).
