Document Summary

Politics in the age of jackson (1824-44): democrats and whigs. Whigs using gov. to intervene in economy, in order to create much more mixed economy w/ agriculture and increasing manufacturing segment. Emphasis on liberty; don"t like laws over morality (like sabbath and alcohol). Tend to favor cheap land sales, but are suspicious of tarrif and national bank. Van buren is jackson"s vice prez and then ends up being prez after. His presidency is basically jackson"s third term follows through on what he wants to do. Can"t do it very well b/c of the problems jackson left him. As soon as he becomes prez, there is a major panic (panic of 1837). International development probs price of cotton goes down; britain pulls money out of us. When jackson had moved all that money from the second national bank into state banks, it effed stuff up (won"t rly have to explain this). Democrat solution only made it worse: take national money.
