Document Summary

Muscular tissue accounts for 40 to 50% of total body mass: depends on age, endocrine system and current fitness. 3 types of muscular tissue: skeletal: voluntary; striated, cardiac: involuntary; striated, smooth: involuntary; striated. Electrical excitability: a property that muscle tissue shares with neurons; it produces a response to a stimuli (internal/external) ex: conductivity: the ability to respond to stimuli by producing action potentials. Contractility: the ability to contract forcefully in response to a stimuli. Extensibility: the ability to stretch without doing damage. Elasticity: ability to return to its regular/original shape. A skeletal muscle bundle consists of a body (belly) connected by tendons to the skeleton. Tendons: a muscle is connected by tendons on the distal ends. Tenosynovitis: inflammation of tendons (wrist, shoulder, ankle joints); caused by trauma or too much exercise. Endomysium: separates the muscle cells; helps bind the muscle fibers together. Epimysium: surrounds the whole muscle; binds all the muscles together to form the muscle belly.
