Protection: skull protects the brain (all vital organs are encased in bone) Structure: look the way we do because of bones. Hematopoiesis (hemopoiesis)- blood cell formation in bone tissue (critical function of the bone: red marrow is where blood cell formation takes place, characteristics: Distal femur remodels every year, a lot of wear and tear: osteoclast, not a bone cell at all, it"s a blood cell, clast=breaking down or removal. Long bone: describes basic shape, not length, ex. Arm and leg bones: doesn"t have to be long to be in the category (long bones in the finger) Periosteum has 2 layers: outer, most superficial, most dense, has very dense collagen projections (project through the inner periosteum and insert on the bone itself (sharpey"s fibers)
