MC 2000 : Some Notes Test 1
Document Summary
Diversity: serious media" vs. drama: you open your mind for the things you want to hear. We don"t want to listen to things that don"t fit our beliefs. Information anxiety: gap between what we understand and what we think we should understand. You just read what you want to: media is bringing bad news > bias and controversy, too much information, framing. 1/23/12: cognitive dissonance: you don"t want to watch or listen to anything you don"t believe in. You select what you want to hear selective exposure: pop culture, high culture: good" taste, fine art. Supported by wealthy patrons and corporate donors: low culture: questionable" taste of masses. Commercial junk" circulated by the mass media: culture as a skyscraper: represents low and high culture. Concerns of the lower culture: may distract students from serious literature, exploits classic works of literature, has a short-life span, undermines and exploits. Buffy & the vampire slayer: high culture wrapped in low culture.
