Document Summary

Management 3200 exam 3: employee motivation, 2 different approaches to motivation, content: what motivates people, process: how to motivate people, content approach, maslow"s need hierarchy theory. 5 categories of needs: 1) physiological, 2)safety, 3)social, 4) esteem, 5) self actualization. Strength of a need is inversely related to its level in the hierarchy: the strongest need is physiological and the weakest need is self actualization, satisfaction of a need triggers dissatisfaction at the next higher level. The greater the satisfaction of a need, the lower the importance of that need and the greater the importance of the next higher need. Organizational/managerial implications: motivation is generally determined by multiple needs, identify most important needs and link need satisfaction to good performance. Organization must be flexible and tailor the incentives to individual employees: realize needs change from time to time and from situation to situation. This runs counter to the recent emphasis on simplification of jobs: alderfer"s erg theory.
