2 history of oceanography: early exploration, middle ages, the age of discovery, science and the sea, modern oceanography, the ocean has been a barrier to humans for a long time, end of ch. 2 has a timeline: polynesians- 4000 bc to 800 ad. Small island, less resources, less space, more people. Had to move across the ocean to have more resources, more space. Birds (small migration pattern, land birds) gave clue that an island was near, even if they couldn"t see it. They trade within the meditearean sea bc if a storm came they would know they are close to land. Hub of exchange of ideas: greek sailing ship-500 bc, the world according to herodotus, eratosthenes. Library at alexandria(large port)- 3rd century bc: early internet . Collected ship logs (original-library, copy-ship"s captain: the logs said where they were able to get food and such. Center of knowledge for nautical science: cultural info about people.
