Accumulation of ooze: aabudance of organisms at the surface, dissolution rate, accumulation of terrigenous sediment (70% or less) review. Nebular hypothesis: gases came together earth formed. Density stratified: dense suck to bottom diff layers, lithosphere, asthenosphere, mesosphere, outer core, inner core. Beginning of life on earth: first simple organisms- bacteria, photosynthesizes, complex soft bodied organisms, slide on powerpoint. Beginning of oceanography: ships marked currents, trade routes, polynesians settled new areas including the hawaiian islands, chinese explored indian ocean, europeans during renaissance started exploring, henry the navigator, columbus, magellan. Science and the sea: light microscope invented, latitude and longitude, john harrison- first clock, james cook- went around the world; mapped pacific ocean, challenger- first scientific expedition to use the term oceanography. Current science: polar expedition, deep sea, use of satelites. Plate tectonics: contenintal drift, alfred wegner, pangaea and panthalassa, evidence on different continents, rocks, fossils, glacial patterns, etc. Paleomagnatism: the study of earth"s ancient magnetic field, can reverse over time.
