Descartes- mathematician; taught augustine theology; wanted to be an official theologian of the church, but the church felt like if people read the end of his work they would believe god is evil. Descartes throws out all opinions he thought were true. Meditation 1: doubts the senses because of dreaming. Senses still happen when you dream and dream is an example of a *hyperbolic doubt. Discount all senses and sciences (things that make up senses) example of paintings, photo-shop. At the end of this descartes questions if we even exist. Meditation 2: he finds something that he cannot doubt is thoughts. I am, i exist, is necessarily true each time i pronounce it or each time i conceive it = most important words spoke in philosophy which is called cogito( i think therefore i am).
