Volunteering
¼ adults volunteered 8 bil. Hours through an organization
o religious, school, sports
young adults today less likely to participate in 9/10 civic
engagement activities, only volunteering frequency has
increased
o some have increased slightly, not enough to
compensate for 30 yr decline
Changes over Time
Putnam’s argument – more nominal than active members
Decline in active memberships
“we connect with one another in associations…”
some increase in “checkbook members”
