Not all groups are equal
• Heterogeneity v homogeneity
• Bonding (Putnam) v bridging (less cohesive internally )
democracy
• Scouts, school organizations, religious mission trips -->
“Spillover” effect – joining causes likely participation in
politics in the future
• Social Reproduction – idea that the wealthy keep their
future generations wealth (outcome determined)
• Social Learning – idea that your knowledge base can
move you out of social class (autonomy)
• Pluralistic System – many overlapping and bridging
groups that compete with each other for power and voice.
More shifting amongst social classes
• Elitist System – top tier of officials keep itself in power,
social reproduction

Volunteering
• ¼ adults volunteered 8 bil. Hours through an organization
o religious, school, sports
• young adults today less likely to participate in 9/10 civic
engagement activities, only volunteering frequency has
increased
o some have increased slightly, not enough to
compensate for 30 yr decline
Changes over Time
• Putnam’s argument – more nominal than active members
• Decline in active memberships
• “we connect with one another in associations…”
• some increase in “checkbook members”
