Dendrite- a short branched extension of a nerve cell, along which impulses received from other cells at synapses are transmitted to the cell body. Soma- cell body of a neuron and contains the nucleus of the cell, the soma doesn"t play an active role in transmitting neural signals, but it keeps the cell functioning and holds the cell"s dna. Axon- the long threadlike parts of a nerve cell along which impulses are conducted from the cell body to other cells. Myelin- the insulating envelope of myelin that surrounds the core of a nerve fiber or axon and that facilitates the transmission of nerve impulses. Terminal- the small knobs at the end of an axon that release chemicals called neurotransmitters.
