Spinal cord- pathway connecting brain and the peripheral nervous system. Includes peripheral nerves; all nerves and neurons that are not contained in the brain or spinal cord but that run though the body itself. Nerves- bundles of axons in the peripheral nervous system. Transmits information to and from the central nervous system. Includes the automatic nervous system- automatically regulates glands, internal organs and blood vessels, pupil dilation, digestion, and blood pressure (involuntary muscles) Parasympathetic division- maintains body functions under ordinary conditions; saves energy; calms (rest-and-digest) Sympathetic division- prepares the body to react and expend energy in times of stress; Includes the somatic nervous system- carries sensory information to and from the cns to the voluntary muscles of the body and controls movement of the skeletal muscles.
