How much information can they each hold, and how long does each last: different types of memory systems, sensory memory- the immediate, very brief recording of sensory information in the memory system. Sensory memory is the initial recording of sensory information in the memory system. Short-term memory (stm)- the memory system in which information is stored or held for a brief periods of time while being used. Working memory (wm)- an active system that processes the information in short-term memory. We can only hold about 5 to 9 bits of information, but it is more common to remember 7 bits of information. The system of memory into which all the information is placed to be kept more or less permanently. It is essentially unlimited meaning there is always room for more information! It is a relatively permanent physical change in the brain when a memory is formed.
