Psychology: scientific study of human behavior and mental processes, systematic method of controlled measurement, replication, and falsification, basic vs. Applied science: basic science creates scientific knowledge. Ex. cognitive: applied science applies knowledge to practical problems. Psychologists try to measure all things: are our minds blank tabula rosa, socrates. Nature is who you are born to be from day one. Nurture is the influences around you how people you know interact with you. 3 roots of psychological sciences: empiricism- knowledge gathered from senses through experience, structuralism- knowledge develops from introspection analysis of experience, functionalism- study of how mind and body adampt to enviornment to enable survival.
