Short term memory: the magic number is 7, plus or minus 2, activated memory that holds a few items briefly, lasts up to about 30 seconds, e. g. the 7 digits of a phone # while dialing, before the information is stored or forgotten, information goes into short term memory but leaves due to interference or decay.
