Document Summary

Be prepared to put symptoms of the disorders we covered to use with regard to case descriptions. Chapter 4: trauma-related and obsessive-compulsive and related disorders. Posttraumatic stress disorder: posttraumatic stress disorder (ptsd) - enduring, distressing emotional disorder that follows exposure to a traumatic event. The victim re-experiences the trauma, avoids stimuli associated with it, and develops a numbing of responsiveness and an increased vigilance and arousal: ptsd cannot be diagnosed until at least one month after the traumatic event has occurred. Intensity of the trauma and one"s reaction to it: learn alarms - direct conditioning and observational learning, biological vulnerability, uncontrollability and unpredictability, social support post-trauma reduces risk. Example: touching door handles and not washing hands afterwards or saying blasphemous phrase and not engaging in ritualized prayer afterwards: combining cbt with medication is no better than just cbt by itself. Chapter 5: somatic symptom and related disorders and dissociative disorders. In severe cases, the symptoms become the person"s identity.
