Family social group accommodated by ppl who live together w/ commitment, care for any children, and share emotional ties. Vary across time/culture but share similarities: functions, regulate sexual behavior certain norms about who you should have sexual relationships w/. Incest=bad: reproduction, socialization most imp agent. Children learn language, basic beliefs, and culture: social placement based on parents" social class. Life chances are diff depending on family"s access to resources: economic security food, shelter, and basic necessities, emotional support love and care. Friends come and go, but family is always there: types, extended several generations of blood relatives sharing 1 household. Includes grandparents, aunts, uncles, and other relatives close to family. Makes it possible to share resources among large group of ppl: nuclear family 1 or 2 parents and their children (adopted or blood). Preferred but only 1/3 of us households fit this. Marriage strife w/ no desire: endogamy marrying w/in one"s social category of race, social class, religion, and ethnicity.
