Social interaction process by which we act towards and react to people around us. Influenced by social structure: social structure organized pattern of behavior that governs people"s relationships. Ex: status, roles that we play, organizations, institutions, technology. Status position in social hierarchy that comes with a set of expectations. Professor has more social status than garbage man. May have more status based on where you go to school, etc: status set collection of social statuses that a person occupies. Ex: woman may be a banker, girl scout troupe leader, school board member, mother, spouse, and volunteer at homeless shelter: ascribed status inborn status. Race: achieved status position we earn thru our efforts. Not all achieved statuses are positions we want to attain. Fatness/obesity are body characteristics that are both ascribed and achieved. For some, it is genetic; for others, it is a result of eating habit: master status overrides all others in id.
