Document Summary

Social structure- relatively stable patterns of society, such as the ways in which people & groups are related to each other & the characteristics of groups influencing our behavior. Statuses- a socially defined position that an individual occupies; ex. age, sex, religion, sex/gender, occupation, religion, nationality, etc. Roles- the social expectations or behaviors associated w/ a particular status. Groups- small groups are easier to look at & conduct research & experiments, etc. , while it gets harder & messier to do so w/ a large group (4+). As the # of people go up, the ties go up, making it harder to study a relationship. Institutions- a stable cluster of values, norms, statuses, & roles that develop around a basic social need. Statuses/roles (also norms): keys for micro-macro link btwn individuals & society. *social status: ascribed vs. achieved, status set/master status. Ascribed status- statuses that are obtained at birth; ex. age, sex, race, etc.
