Document Summary
A soft science involves measuring things that cannot be directly measured. Emile durkheim: one of the first fathers of sociology (wanted credit). Other 2 fathers: karl marx and max vaber. Groups of people are much more predictable than individuals. The whole is different than the sum of the parts. Durkheim said groups of people act in predictable ways. Believed in the existence of social facts. If sociology is not different than psychology, than there is no sociology. Needed to distinguish a difference between sociology and psychology. Altruistic: (opp. of egoistic) too concerned with other people. Sociology is the study of predictable group behavior over time. Groups who get too far to one side of the spectrum or other are at a higher risk for suicide. In order to be highly scientific, must be: reliable, valid. Mark regenerous: said gay parents raising children have a negative effect. Gay parents are stigmatized; therefore gay parents are set up for failure.
