Primary group- a relatively small group or people who engage in intimate face to face interaction over an extended period. Secondary groups a large, usually formal, impersonal and temporary collection of people who pursue a specific goal or activity. In-groups people who share a sense of identity that excludes and devalues outsiders. Out-groups people who are viewed and treated negatively b/c they are seen as having values, beliefs, and other characteristics different from those of an in-group. Reference groups a group of people who shape our behavior, values and attitudes. Group conformity: studies show that most people are influenced by group pressure. Zimbardo"s research: prison experiment (had subjectsw act like guards and prisoners showed the pwrful effect of group conformity. Janis research: focused on why people in groups may make disastrous and irrational decisions.
