Mead: what does the self do in society- looking at larger scale than. Idea of social belonging, that we are a part of society. Background of where social interaction occurs is important. Interpret actions- ex speaking to someone that speaks another language and interpreting their behaviors: way we think and act is not always a conscious decision, facebook, texting, etc removes contexts, sarcasm difficult to interpret, conversation principles. Utterances: fit in precise way to ongoing flow of conversations with others, simultaneous utterances. Emotion: some people better at hiding than others, performances arranged for specific purposes with specific display content that varies by context, crying, fighting, laughing. Performance and feedback applause, applause! : appreciating performance creates cycle of mutual reinforcement between actors and applauding audience. Our behavior changed by both things we can and cannot control. Interaction in public: communication strategies altered when interacting with strangers.
