I believe in this quote descaretes" is discussing the existence of humankind"s ability to think for its own, and more importantly discussing free will. In the early seventeenth century the time of the quotes origin society was very structured. Descartes" quote was revolutionary because he basically stated that each person had the ability to think outside of the constraints that were taught to them about society and religion and choose their own path in life. I agree with this quote to a certain extent because each person does have a god given free will; however, i feel that there is more control over how someone will think and inevitably act. Karl marx also had a similar quote around the nineteenth century.
