Document Summary

First law of thermodynamics for a closed system. Per unit mass: q - w = e. First law of thermodynamics for an open system. An ideal gas enters a diffuser at 100 kpa, 300 k and with a velocity of 250 m/s and the exits the diffuser with a velocity of 25 m/s. Determine the diffuser exit temperature if the gas is argon, helium or nitrogen. Air at 600 kpa and 500 k enters an adiabatic (no heat transfer) nozzle that has an inlet-to-exit area ratio of 2:1 with a velocity of 120 m/s and leaves with a velocity of 380 m/s. Determine: (i) the exit temperature and (ii) the exit pressure of the air. A gas turbine setup to produce power during peak demand is shown in fig. The turbine provides power to the air compressor and the electric generator.
