Louis pasteur: was able to discern between chemical isomers and organisms. Method: boiled a growth medium, in a regular flask, organisms would appear, used a swan neck flask. Prevented dust particles with organisms from contaminating sample: liquid remained sterile no matter how long it was left there. Rabies (with emile roux: famous for saving joseph meister, who had been bit by a rapid dog, used dried nerve cells of infected animals to give heathy individuals immunity. The hypothesis: when nerve tissue from an infected organism was dried, it was weakened. We now refer to this as attenuation: healthy individuals who received doses or the attenuated virus would develop immunity to it. It took a long time to get results, the disease can occur anywhere from one to nine months after exposure. Found the bacteria that causes anthrax and tuberculosis: tried to make a vaccine for tb. Used it on himself and fell very ill.
