PSYCH 2410 Study Guide - Midterm Guide: Sociometric Status, Peer Pressure, Parenting Styles
Document Summary
Family dynamics- how the family operates as a whole- most important predictor of functioning: all members influence each other in multiple ways, not just behavior that affects other family members, but nature too. For example through their everyday actions, parents unintentionally demonstrate skills and communicate information and rules. Authoritarian- cold/unresponsive to child"s needs, extremely controlling/ demanding, expect children to comply without question, use threats and punishments to exercise parents power: children are lower in competence, unhappy and unfriendly, low in self-confidence. Permissive- responsive to child"s wants and needs, lenient with child, do not require self- regulation: children are impulsive, lack self- control, low in school achievement, more likely to have trouble in school, more likely to use drugs. Socioeconomic status affects parenting style: low ses- more likely authoritarian, high ses- talk more to kids, better communication between parent and child.
