o Cobalt = tied to modern slavery
o Dilemma = everything we use electronically has cobalt in it from the Democrat of
Congo
▪ supply 60% of cobalt to the world, which is mostly attained through
child/slave labor

▪ can put together a program for the ethical sourcing of cobalt
o Learn about your supply chain and need to be prepared to make decisions
o Battery used to create a vehicle that travels from Chicago to New York = battery
is composed of components to others but it makes enhanced use of cobalt to
make a certain alloy in order to give it the extra energy it needs
o Main source of cobalt = by-product of copper and nickel mining
▪ Copper belt in democratic Republic of the Congo yields most of the cobalt
mined worldwide
o Actual mining process of cobalt takes place in three African countries whose
minnig companies have come under fire from human rights organizations for
using child labor and not meeting workplace standards
▪ Companies such as Apple and Samsung have stopped sourcing cobalt
from certain mining companies for this reason
