• Race Car Pit Stops – An Example of What Lean Can Do:
o Think about the videos we watched in class which show how race car pit stops
have changed and improved over time
o Shows how lean manufacturing can be used to improve pit stops
▪ originally was very difficult to manage when the car would come in so it
would take around 57 seconds
o However, people started to realize that if you could reduce the time of the pit
stop, then you would have an edge

• if you can improve manufacturing, then you can also get an edge
o Technology changes that improved this process =
▪ better ways to get tires on, regulation changes that allow more people to
help, and process changes
▪ Types of improvement =
• technological, regulatory, and process
o If you are able to make these changes, then can get in and out of pit stop must
faster
▪ in 2012, it only took 12 seconds
▪ This was due to more standardized processes, better technology, and
changing regulatory behavior
