Inorganic Synthesis- Preparation of Sodium Thiosulfate Pentahydrate
The purpose of this experiment is to prepare a sample of Sodium Thiosulfate
Pentahydrate by heating sulfur with a solution of sodium sulfite with a small amount of
detergent to help dissolve the sulfur. Three reactions are performed on the Thiosulfate to
show its laboratory and commercial uses.
Sodium sulfite and sulfur are both skin irritants. Silver nitrate will stain skin but
does no harm. Iodine is a toxic irritant that is corrosive to skin. Hydrochloric acid is
toxic and will burn skin. There are no major health risks associated wi
