PSYC 3406 Study Guide - Midterm Guide: Substance Abuse, Natural Disaster, Anxiety Disorder
From Lecture:
Eating Disorders
● Bulimia is more culture bound than anorexia
● Restrictive eating occurs everywhere in the world, even in animals
● Biology underlies restrictive eating, grow lanugo (fine hair) for insulation
● Waste-away syndrome → several birds die after receiving high levels of estrogen
(puberty) interacts with serotonin and causes them to stop caring about natural rewards
(food, mating)
Important Historical Figures
● Philippe Pinel and Jean-Baptiste Pussin
● William Tuke
● Benjamin Rush
● Dorothea Dix
What is Abnormal Psychology?
● Abnormal describes behavioral, emotional, or cognitive dysfunctions that are unexpected
in their cultural context
Different Psychological Perspectives
Biological
● Two types of dopamine receptors, D1 and D2
○ One activates a cell (D2)
○ Other inactivates a cell (D1)
Humanistic
● Unconditional Positive Regard: Basic acceptance and support of a person regardless of
what they say or do, within the context of client-centered therapy.
● Humanistic therapy doesn’t necessarily work because there is little evidence-based
research that supports it and because it often relies on self report which isn’t always
reliable
Psychoanalytic
● Freud
● Hypothesis based on psychosexual development → stuck because of feelings of
inadequacy
○ Oral → wasn’t breastfed
○ Anal → problems with potty training, bedwetting
○ Phallic → attachment to opposite sex parent, beastiality group, other paraphilias
○ Latency
● Beastiality falls under paraphilias
