What does it mean to grow up?
● Forward motion- building on things and learning from them to develop complex skills and
behaviors as well as retain more information (not just physical)
● How and why do we experience certain things
What does it mean to be alive?
● “A living thing is distinguished from a dead thing by the multiplicity of the CHANGES at
any moment taking place in it”- Herbert Spencer
philosopher/renaissance
■ First person to relate the law of nature/survival of the fittest to how the
brain changes and why we do what we do
● Upwards mobility when developing (like climbing up a ladder/really more like a spiral-we
go around)
○ Changes children are not used to or that make them uncomfortable might arise
like them regressing (wetting the bed, etc. despite them knowing better) when
under a lot of stress
Child development:
● Identifies and describes changes in the child’s cognitiva, emotional, motor and social
capacities and behaviors
○ Uncover the process that underlines these changes to really understand how and
why they occur, we need to know the why
■ Ex: how does everybody know when to start puberty? When to go into
labor? We can describe how but we do not know exactly what our bodies
do or how the signal works
○ How does our brain change over time?
● Formative experiences
○ They have a profound and lasting influence in your development during your
“formative years”
Transitions
○ Passage from one state, stage or subject to another: change
○ Movement or development of one style to another
Context
○ That surrounding a word or passage that throws light to its meaning
○ Related conditions of why something happens:
■ Its environment
■ Its setting

○ Trends in developmental theories
Babies

● In the last two years the population has grown 7 fold.
○ Changes the way we have to see education and  support for families especially in
3rd world countries
○ The resources of the world are poorly divided.
■ Only 18% of the world population is in developed countries
■ But developed countries have 55.4% of the world’s resources GDP
○ Kids don’t question things they just learn so that is why dictatorships take over
the education system
● Variations Within Countries
○ Majority culture- sets norms and standards, holds most positions of power. They
don’t necessarily need to be the biggest, but the strongest.
○ Contexts - settings & circumstances
○ SES = Socioeconomic Status - Social class including educational level, income
level and occupational status
○ Gender- expectations of male and female roles
○ Ethnicity- Cultural origin, traditions, race and religion & language
● Major Themes in Developmental Theory
○ Nature vs. Nurture
○ Continuity vs Discontinuity
■ When change occurs in human development, what does it look like?
● Stages or continuous growth?
○ Stability vs Change
■ As individuals develop, do their characteristics remain stable over time or
do they change?
● Ie. will a talkative child remain that way their whole life?
○ Early vs Later Life Experiences
■ Psychoanalytic theories
● Our childhood experiences form the basis for all adult trajectories
○ But.. childhood abuse victims largely go on to have fulfilling
adjusted lives. Most do not turn to violence.
