a. Portuguese to East Africa, India, and the East Indies
Spice Trade
a.i. Europe had come in contact with Asian spices before the
renaissance, so they knew how great they were and spices became
in big demand
a.ii. After the crusade, the black death disrupted trade between the
Mongols and the Europeans
a.iii. Due to merchants of dying of the black death and the break-up of
the Mongols Empire, trade of silk and spices was much slower

a.v. Maps: Cartographers created accurate maps and sea charts

a.viii. Portugal controlled the spice trade in most of the 1500’s, but the
Dutch controlled it for most of the 1600’s w/ the Dutch East India
