Document Summary

Still life derives from the dutch word stilleven, coined in the 17th century when paintings of objects enjoyed immense popularity throughout europe. The impetus for this term came as artists created compositions of greater complexity, bringing together a wider variety of objects to communicate allegorical meanings. Still life has come to serve, like landscape or portraiture, as a catego- ry within art. It typically refers to depictions of inanimate things, (de- rived from nature and also human made). However, because it incor- porates a vast array of influences from different cultures and periods in history, it has always resisted precise definition. Think about creating images with interesting juxtapositions, objects unexpectedly appearing together. Consider composition, lighting, exposure and of course focus! What you include in the frame is very important but what you exclude is also im- portant. Where the frame cuts often creates much of the tension in an image.
