Document Summary

Dura mater: thick, tough connective tissue that separates the softer meninges and the brain itself from the cranial bones. Arachnoid mater: loose mesh of protein fibers that is found between the dura and pia mater. Can be clearly seen between the cerebral and cerebellar hemispheres. The space between the arachnoid and pia mater (the subarachnoid space) is filled with cerebral spinal fluid (csf), which physically supports, protects, and helps nourish the brain (most csf is produced here) Pia mater: thin, delicate, almost transparent membrane that adheres closely to the gyri, sulci, and other external structures of the brain. Cerebral cortex (cerebrum): found within the right and left cerebral hemispheres. The circuits of nerves within the cerebral hemispheres control your voluntary movements, allow you to interpret your senses, think thoughts and make judgements, and is the place where your memories are stored.
