100 years ago, coal was by far the dominant energy source world-wide. A cogeneration power plant generates both electric power and useful thermal energy from the same fuel source (t). A generator works on the principle of electromagnetic induction. (t) A petroleum refinery converts crude oil into marketable products by distilling it into its separate components, cracking the larger molecules into lighter, more useful compounds, and by reforming various components into desired new compounds.
